Your gardening zone is the most important factor to be aware of when looking through catalogues for the types of perennials to plant. What is a perennial in Zone 10 will likely not even do well during the growing season in Zone 3, and vice versa. Plants that like the cool, drier air of a Zone 2, will not do well in the hot, humid weather of a Zone 10. Some plants that are perennials in some gardening zones, may grow well in a harsher zone but not survive winter. It is much safer to choose plants from neighbours who are dividing theirs, or local greenhouses, as they should be the types of perennials already suited to your climate.
There are three main types of flowers: annuals, biennials, and perennials. Annuals are started from seed at the beginning of each growing season. They grow quickly and flower for a long period of the growing season, with proper care. Biennials are also started from seed. They spend their first year growing, and come back the next year to flower, ending their cycle. These types of plants may or may not set seed, depending on the plants, the seasons, and the care given them.
Perennials can be started from seed too but it will be several years before they can produce any flowers because the root system has to be well established in order to keep the plant alive during the dormant or winter season. After this is accomplished, a Perennial Plant will begin to bloom. Again, because the roots must be kept healthy to keep the plant alive again next year, the blooming season is much shorter than that of annuals or biennials. This does not mean they are not worth growing. The older they get, the larger they become and the more flowers they have when they do bloom. Also, they are an investment. Once you have them established, you do not need to get new ones each year.
The simplest way to classify types of perennials is according to the size the plant achieves. The size is gauged by the height and spread of the foliage. Rock plants, and some types of sedums and mosses can flourish under one inch high, but may spread several feet across. Other perennials like the hosta, and osteospermum are considered to be small as well, even though they may reach twenty-four inches. The hosta can send its flower spikes up a foot over its foliage, and grow to five feet across quickly. In contrast, plants like delphiniums, Joe-Pye Weed and Elephants' Ears can be six to seven feet tall. Mid-sized flowers like peonies, bleeding hearts, irises, astilbes, lupins, poppies, chrysanthemums, and geraniums are the most common types of perennials. Whether these plants are perennials or not, again, depends where you live.
The next factors that will determine what types of perennials you plant will be how much sun they will get in the location you want to put them in, and how wet or dry they want to be. There are shade loving perennial flowers available in every size, as there are sun loving perennial flowers available in every size. A plant that likes to be dry will not like a spot that is damp or wet all the time, but if you are willing to water, a plant that likes to be well-watered can be put in a dry location.
The final consideration when choosing the types of perennials you want to grow is color. Most often perennials are grown as a part of a landscape plan. They are very effective for hiding a fence, or filling in the emptiness under a high deck. Most often they are a solution for some bare spot or problem in the yard. Therefore, color is not the most important issue but there are plenty of choices. Within the different types of perennials there are always different colors, or at the very least, a variety of shades of the color.
